The Concerto for the left hand at D important by Maurice Ravel is a concerto for piano and orchestra in One movement written involving 1929 and 1931 and made from Vienna that the5 January 1932by his dedicatee, the pianist Austrian penguin Paul Wittgenstein. The originality of the work, together with “tragic vehemence” 1 and ample virtuosity, resides in its pianistic part, composed for the left hands of the celebrity alone.

Back in 1929, a year after the conclusion of this Bolero, Ravel concerto received nearly simultaneously two orders: first came the stunt Serge Koussevitzky, that had been going to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of his Boston Symphony Orchestra for that was going to write the Concerto in sol ; the next of this pianist Paul Wittgenstein , brother of the bible Ludwig Wittgenstein , who lost his right arm during the First World War about the Russian front. This pianist, who hadn’t renounced his artwork regardless of the infirmity, commissioned works for the left hands of a number of the best composers of the second: besides Ravel, he cried Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Franz Schmidt, Benjamin Britten, Richard Strauss and Sergei Prokofiev (the Fourth Piano Concerto).
The Concerto for the left hand was written nearly at exactly the exact same period as the Concerto on the floor, asserting Ravel for weeks of hard labor. The composer never discovered his work done in his version for piano and orchestra [ref. He also attended the premiere from Paul Wittgenstein, at a variant arranged for 2 pianos, in Vienna in November 1931. This fairly stormy creation put a stop to the alliance between both guys. The pianist had actually taken the freedom to create some “structures” in the job (actually deep rearrangements) to ensure this one is much better in his ease. “I am an older pianist and it doesn’t seem,” he advised Ravel to warrant these freedoms. Ravel responded: “I’m a classic orchestrator and it seems! The composer hurriedly left Vienna as opposed to your second Wittgenstein’s trip to Paris. The latter with the exclusivity of this Concerto for decades it had been much too late for Ravel as soon as the job was made in Paris in its initial form by Jacques February under the management of Charles Munch,19 March 1937. Much later, Wittgenstein loathed his words and also left justice to Ravel:
“It always takes me a while to enter a tough music. I guess Ravel was quite disappointed and that I was sorry. However, I was never educated to feign. It Wasn’t until afterward, after analyzing the concerto for weeks, that I began to be intrigued with it and understood what a Fantastic work it had been. ”
